Literacy at play: an analysis of media literacy games used to foster media literacy competencies

Media literacy is considered one of the key competencies to acquire in 21st century. With games being recognized as having a large potential train and educate, wide range focusing on media related topics such fake news games, digital privacy, personal habits, practical skills have sprung up over years. All claim foster competencies. This begs question how these generally frame understand literacy, what they actually focus on, through which game design choices. paper thus asks: are designed literacy? Taking Dutch Literacy Competencies Model departure point, we answer this using thematic analysis 100 formal smaller heterogeneous sample consisting 12 games. We present series findings involving prominent presence certain dataset, well prevalent choices, allowing for discussion current landscape underlying future development.
